Our Beliefs

Like the pulp of a pear fruit, our educational beliefs form the body of our philosophy. They are our how, and give us guidance as we implement this philosophy into our everyday lives as home educators.

We believe:

  • Loving & committed parents are the best teachers children can have.
  • The home environment is optimal for unhindered learning, and classrooms don’t need walls.
  • Structure is important (routine, consistency, guidance & boundaries).
  • But so is freedom (free play, creativity, imagination & making mistakes).
  • In creating virtuous, inquisitive, & confident children over mindlessly obedient workers.
  • In using living books and sometimes reference books, but never text books.
  • It’s important to refer to a hierarchy of values when choosing educational resources.
  • There’s a direct correlation between the wellness of the child and the success of the educational process.
  • In joy-filled learning through immersive education.
  • In a predominantly low tech approach.
  • In fostering a yearning for goodness, truth & beauty over rigorous fact memorization and repetition.
  • In recognizing and encouraging God-given talents.
  • A well rounded education includes everyday home life (cleaning, cooking, farm chores, etc…).
  • In a balance between parent guided and child inspired homeschool days.
  • In aiming towards living knowledge (applied, integrated, and expansive) vs. settling for sterile knowledge (facts, facts & more facts).
  • In truly holistic education – teaching to the WHOLE human being.
  • The ways in which we implement our educational philosophy should shift and change as the child develops.
  • Perfection is NOT required (or even ideal).
